National Youth Dance Company of Scotland Take Off for Australia

NATIONAL YOUTH DANCE COMPANY OF SCOTLAND TAKE OFF FOR AUSTRALIA

The talented young dancers of the National Youth Dance Company of Scotland (NYDCS) are spreading their wings and flying to Canberra (Australia) today – Tuesday 5 April – for a two-week creative exchange and performance opportunity.  YDance (Scottish Youth Dance) has developed the exchange programme with QL2 Dance (Canberra) and their young dance ensemble Quantum Leap to include creative workshops with youth dance groups from across Australia, a new collaborative piece of work and a performance.

YDance’s flagship contemporary youth dance company, made up of 13 dancers aged 16 to 21, is due to spend 5 days at the beginning of the trip working creatively with the young dancers of the Australian group Quantum Leap to create a brand new contemporary dance piece with Anna Kenrick (YDance Artistic Director) and Ruth Osborne (QL2 Dance Artistic Director).  Both companies will have the chance to meet youth dance groups from across Australia and spend a further 3 days in the dance studio working and learning together in creative workshops.

In the final days of the trip both NYDCS and Quantum Leap will perform their individual work and the new collaborative piece for a live audience at The Q theatre in Queanbeyan as a triple bill called Ten Thousand Miles.  The National Youth Dance Company of Scotland will perform Maelstrom choreographed by Anna Kenrick (YDance Artistic Director) and the Canberra performance will be the first since Maelstrom was premiered in YDance Routes Destinations at the Tramway (Glasgow) in early March.  The new Maelstrom piece strongly focusses on the modern online world and the invisible invasions and risks to human relationships from data overload.  The two-week creative exchange and performance opportunity in Australia is a momentous beginning for the National Youth Dance Company of Scotland’s 2016 tour of Maelstrom.

Ruth Osborne, QL2 Dance Artistic Director said: “In Glasgow, our dancers found an amazing national youth dance company with many similarities to our Quantum Leap ensemble. The National Youth Dance Company of Scotland showed a maturity and professionalism in their work, and treated dance intelligently as well as emotionally. We are very excited about working with this national company, and seeing how the next cohort of Australian and Scottish dancers work together. And thanks to The Q, we can show the works at their beautiful theatre.”

The prospect of the international trip was first discussed shortly after Quantum Leap performed at the hugely successful Commonwealth Youth Dance Festival, delivered by YDance as part of the Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme in July that year.  The two-week exchange is in line with the objectives of Creative Scotland’s Time to Shine National Youth Arts Strategy to establish Scotland as an international leader in children and young peoples’ art.

Anna Kenrick, YDance Artistic Director said: “This international trip is an important step in the progression and future of the National Youth Dance Company of Scotland and YDance as the national dance organisation for children and young people in Scotland.  Participating in exchange programmes like this provides the National Youth Dance Company of Scotland dancers a key opportunity to expand their developing skill set in dance and performance, and displays Scotland as a strong leader in youth dance on an international stage.  It is an exciting opportunity for YDance to build international relationships to support and continue our commitments to delivering high quality dance experiences for young people throughout Scotland.”

On returning to the UK the National Youth Dance Company of Scotland will perform at the UK national youth dance festival U.Dance (Salford) and at the International Youth Arts Festival Kingston (London)  in July before a performance with National Youth Dance Wales this August in Cardiff.

National Youth Dance Company of Scotland is supported by Creative Scotland’s Time to Shine National Youth Arts Strategy Fund.
