Shake It Up

Shake It Up is a four year project which will be delivered in four local authorities in Scotland.  The project is designed to raise the attainment of the children participating by using dance to teach normally classroom-based subjects.

The Dance Artists in Education will be resident in a primary school for two years where they will work creatively with the classroom teacher to design the cross curricular content to be delivered in each class, adhering to the learning intentions and success criteria for each lesson.

The successful candidates must have experience of teaching primary school children (minimum three years), creating cross curricular dance lessons, and have a good understanding of the Curriculum for Excellence and the Scottish Education system.

The Dance Artists in Education will work a 36 hour week devising and delivering dance workshops. The Dance Artists in Education will generally work flexible working hours according to the demands of the post.

Job Description

YDance is seeking two Dance Artists in Education to deliver the Shake It Up project.

The post holders will work a 36 hour week devising and delivering dance workshops. The Dance Artists in Education will generally work flexible working hours according to the demands of the post.

Main duties

  • To develop content for and deliver cross curricular dance in education sessions in schools as directed by the Assistant Director
  • To hold weekly meetings with class teachers to develop ideas and methods for effective teaching of subjects through dance
  • To lead CLPL sessions with schools as required as directed by the Assistant Director
  • To keep accurate records of registration and attendance and of information required
  • To collect and input quantitative and qualitative evidence of the effect of the project as required
  • To develop and maintain positive links with the Head Teachers and Management Team at each of the schools and other partnership agencies and organisations in the local areas of work.
  • To establish and maintain a high standard of dance and tuition in keeping with the established quality of YDance work.
  • To contribute to the administration and evaluation of projects with the Assistant Director

Management 

Direct Line Management of the post of Dance Artist in Education will be the responsibility of the Assistant Director.

Person Specification

Essential Skills

  • Experience of teaching primary school children (minimum three years)
  • Must have experience of creating cross curricular dance lessons
  • Must have a good understanding of the Curriculum for Excellence and the Scottish Education system
  • Ability to inspire, respond to and respect needs of children and young people in the arts
  • A degree or equivalent qualification in contemporary dance
  • Experience of undertaking dance development work in community and / or education settings
  • Teaching and choreographic skills
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Good Time Management
  • Computer literacy 

Desirable Skills 

  • Full Driving Licence
  • Experience in creating and delivering cross curriculum learning
  • Teacher training
  • Project management
  • Knowledge and understanding of evaluation and monitoring systems
  • Ability to represent YDance in a wide range of contexts, from local schools to national agencies
  • Ability to work on own initiative and to enthuse and inspire others to achieve positive results

Pay and Conditions

Salary:  £21,500 – £23,000 per annum

If successful candidates will be required to attend an audition, interview and will lead and observed cross curricular lesson in a primary school.  YDance will provide the subject for the lesson after the closing date.
